6 Tips to Keep Your Home Allergy Free

best robot vacuums use a HEPA filter

Did you know that more than half of the population have reported a positive reaction to one or more allergens? Sneezing, itchy eyes and an irritated throat, you’re certainly not alone. There are many ways to deal with allergies as some only flare up during certain seasons, and a simple antihistamine can often do the trick. Nonetheless, allergies are incredibly inconvenient and doing everything you can to treat the underlying cause is essential for you and your family’s health. Fortunately, there are lots of strategies you can implement around your home and office to maintain an allergy-free environment. Here are six quick tips to keep your house clean and free from pesky allergens.

Maintain your vacuum and air conditioner

The efficient filtering of air is the most crucial part of removing allergens, dirt and other particles from your home. Every vacuum cleaner comes with an air filter, ensuring (almost) all debris is removed from the air before being ejected back into the air. The best vacuums use a HEPA filter to capture as many harmful particles as possible. For the filter to work effectively, it should be cleaned as often as possible and completely replaced every year, if you’re using your vacuum as often as you should.

“Check and replace the filter in your AC unit every few months”

Air conditioners are also notorious at spreading allergens if not maintained. Check and replace the filter in your AC unit every few months. The last thing you want is dirty air from outside being spread throughout your otherwise clean and well-maintained home. Do these two things, and you’ll be well on your way to eliminating allergies for good.

Keep your bedroom clean

Bedrooms are a hotspot for allergies. After all, you spend at least a third of your day there. If there’s one room to optimise, it’s the bedroom. The notorious ‘bed bug’ is a genuine problem, as are their close relatives in dust mites. Nestled up in your bed sheets and pillow, no one wants to share their private space with these intruders. Choose an allergy-proof pillow and use a mattress pad to limit the buildup of dust in your bed. Most importantly, make an effort to wash your sheets, pillowcases and blankets weekly.

Mop your floors

Regular mopping minimises the spread of allergens in the air. Dust, pet fur, pollen and other antagonising microorganisms thrive indoors and can cause common allergies. If you want to reduce your symptoms, mopping alongside your usual vacuum can go a long way.

Some advanced robot vacuums will also mop your home. While these robots can’t wholly replace your old-fashioned elbow-grease, they can go a long way. Robot vacuums with a mop feature carry a water tank which you fill up when required. Modern tanks are quite large, so your robot will be able to mop most homes in one go. Get a robot vacuum with a mop and save yourself a whole bunch of cleaning time.

Set boundaries for your furry friends

Unfortunately, our pets are notorious for triggering asthma and allergies in humans. Pet hair is not tolerated well by many people, requiring them to set boundaries to manage exposure. Although it’s tempting, try not to let them on your bed, couches or other raised furniture you use regularly. Give them regular baths and brush them weekly (or more often if shedding). Consider automated daily vacuuming with a robot vacuum to eliminate the buildup of pet hair in your home.

Clear out any mould

Mould forms in damp areas and can trigger blocked noses, sneezing, coughs and respiratory issues including asthma. Use waterproof sealant or caulk to patch up any cracks in your floors, windowsills, sinks or walls to eliminate moisture buildup. Ensure all your rooms are well ventilated to reduce humidity and prevent the formation of mould.

Upgrade your vacuum

Almost every home has a vacuum, and it’s your number one tool to eliminate allergens found around the house. Carpets hold onto dirt and other allergens, so they need to be vacuumed regularly. If your vacuum lacks sufficient power, is clunky to use, or simply isn’t doing its job, then it’s time to upgrade. Robot vacuums make a great backup or a staple for your regular clean. The key is to select a model that balances function, effectiveness and cost.

If you’re using a robot to run a light backup clean now and then, you don’t need a top-of-the-line model. If you’re using a robot alongside your primary vacuum, have it run daily, performing a manual clean with your stick or barrel vacuum once a week. Almost every home can, and should, take advantage of a robot vacuum cleaner. They’re now as affordable as ever and the time savings easily outweigh the cost, making them a fantastic investment to keep your home allergy-free.
